I saw the bike in like '89 still running. Yup those dastards at Honda w/'78 Elsie.Had to practically give my 'taco away.$500 bucks. I ask him, his dad Orv, Houtermans(the wrench), everyone on the track.NO BUTTON FOUND. I wasn't like a close friend of Shu, but had took a pic, Modern Cycle published it and turned into a Maico Ad for CN. Yup.like the most perfect day.perfect track.don't feel bad I didn't get to ride, not due to bike probs, but NO FRIGGEN KILL BUTTON. It's a beotch when your bike is instantly obsolete and you need to find a sucker to by it pennies on the dollar. I remember my heart dropping when Honda revamped the 250 Elsinore with the red rockets in 78. I passed Shu on the way back (he was there racing open bikes that day, just off Ossas and onto the Maico's). My Ossa sheared the flywheel key in moto one and I pushed it back. Like Larry said, I'll bet Higgins, Gray were there as well.Frank Stacy? or was that too late for him and too early for Andy?ħ8 was a beautiful day with perfect conditions at Plymouth. Maroney was on a 125 'zook at Hangtown that yr. of course it was him.Maroney's number seemed like in the 40's in '79 season.Had pics of all the pros, but like most everything else got tossed "by mistake". they moved Hangtown to Prarie City and she had this weird deal of wanting me to take pics of the rider with "Pat" on the butt of his leathers. Might've been Maroney. My sis went with a bunch of us the first yr. One practice spot was at Diamondback ($1 per day!) and another up at Daytona. We practiced at the same tracks during the week. They had the best contingency money going!īailey was at every round with Gary wrenching. You are right guys Florida was covered up with Maicos in that series. I think the 60 was Pat Maroney (Suz) as I recall he was at every race. Bul 125's were still competitive till '75 and like the rest, Montesa and Ossa(Spanish) gone and done by '79.Ĭould by Mickey Kessler on one of those Maicos. My '78 was my fav of all the Buls with the '73 125 Sang close. My 76 Sang was one of my all time favorite rides for sure. The '78 models had major engine seizure probs and Bul in their infamous wisdom shot themselves in the foot offering a 60 day top/bottom end warranty and that year buried any hopes of later models. That was one fast mo'fo of a bike when I took a Dremel to that aftermarket reed block, redoing the jetting.
I appreciate the kind words. That was a Thor swingarm they made specifically for the '78s if memory is correct. That swingarm is a work of art!! Thanks for sharing!! I can't even imagine how nice that bike must have looked in person.
